Last Thursday the Conservative Administration at Southampton City Council announced that Test Lane had been ruled out of being a possible site for the redevelopment of the Town Depot.

Councillor Paul Holmes welcomed the decision by the council to purchase land at Dock Gate 20 resulting in Test Lane being ruled out of the equation. Paul has always believed that Test Lane was never the right site and has always pushed the administration to rule this site, Paul is now delighted with the news.

Paul said 'I am delighted that the council has taken this decision. I have always thought that therewere better options and have been pushing for many weeks to exclude Test Lane. Its great news for local residents who have made their representations in an extremely effective way'.

Thursday 20th March- Spitfire Tribute Campaign

On Thursday 20th March, Dr Liam Fox MP came to Southampton to meet Councillors (including Paul) and Candidates to talk about the Spitfire Tribute Campaign.

THE national Conservative Party has thrown its support behind the campaign for a towering tribute to the Spitfire.

Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox pledged that a Tory Government would champion the ambitious plans for a 180ft stainless steel memorial at Town Quay.

On a visit to Southampton’s Solent Sky Museum, as part of a tour of the region with parliamentary candidates Councillor Royston Smith and Councillor Jeremy Moulton, Mr Fox said the landmark was of national importance.

He said: “So seldom do you get one piece of equipment that is so iconic and so identified with the country’s freedom than you do with the Spitfire and it’s because of the contribution that it almost uniquely made at a vital time in Britain’s history.

“There is absolute duty that we don’t forget the contribution it made.”

He added: “The people of Southampton designed and built what became one of the saviours of this country in its hour of need.

“Not only should the people of Southampton celebrate that the Spitfire was part of them, but the country as a whole should remember what a contribution it made to this country’s ultimate survival from the evils of Nazism.”

On the 29th November Paul, along with Cllr's Neil Fitzgerald (Scholing Ward) and Ben Walker (Coxford Ward) visited the headquarters of City Patrol. In this visit they talked about the tasks that City Patrol had to carry out and went on patrol with them.

2nd December 2008- Ward Update

After numerous complaints about the state of the road signs in Old Redbridge, particulaly in Gover Road, Westover Road and Test Lane, Paul has successfully had them replaced with new clean and modern signage. The road signs should last for a great number of years and add a new cleaner feel to the area.

Paul summed up his month: 'This month has been a busy one, I have attended numerous events on behalf of the people of Redbridge. These range from some consultation meetings on the new Lordshill Academy Site, through to Residents meetings in the Channel Islands Estate area and the Maybush District Community Association. The MDCA also invited me to have the honour of being their President for the year. I have had meetings over the future building of Redbridge Primary School, and have continued Chairing the Planning and Rights of Way Panel at the council. Of course, the casework also continues!'

10TH OCTOBER 2008

Today, Paul went along to award certificates and prizes to the children who helped clean up their local area on the recent CREW event in Lower Brownhill Road. The children, who were a mixture Junior Neighbourhood Wardens and volunteers spent the weekend cleaning the community garden and surrounding areas in their spare time in order to make where they live even better.

This event was a testimony to the hard work and dedication that the neighbourhoods team put into involving the community in improving where they live.

Paul said, 'It is absoloutely brilliant to see children of all ages working hard to clean up and encourage the upkeep of their local area. People say communities do not work together anymore, but today proved that wrong! Well done to all of the children and their mum's and dad's for helping out in the CREW week'
